Breeder Research Requirements

  • It is not uncommon to have to travel to the right breeder, but we do understand you may have limits to your travel. We will discuss travel ability and present breeders in the states you are able to travel to.

  • Health testing is performed on parent dogs and should be done before the breeding takes place. This is essential to increasing the likelihood of having a long working life for your service dog. We follow the recommendations put forth by parent clubs and and OFA CHIC. Some testing is done once and some must be done yearly.

  • Breeders can offer a health guarantee on their puppies for different health conditions common for the breed. This shows a commitment to their puppies and their health even once they go home. Time of guarantee and what it covers can vary and it is important to look over any guarantee before moving forward with a breeder.

  • How long a breeder keeps their puppies can drastically effect how well their puppies do in their next home. We will not recommend any breeders that do not follow legal age requirements of puppies being sent home.

  • Quality breeding does come with a price and that can vary per breed and region. What we do NOT want to see is different prices for different colors or sex. It costs the same to raise each puppy in the litter so their cost to customers should not vary.

  • Often people do not understand the need or importance of titling on breeding dogs. Titling is similar to third party quality testing. It is evaluated by someone who does not have stock or an investment in the dog. We can learn a lot through titling such as structure, ability to learn, desire to please, athletic ability, handler focus, endurance and more!

  • There are structured rearing protocols that breeders can use while raising a litter. These protocols can give your prospect the best start possible. They can help with confidence, scent ability, body awareness, stamina, handler focus and more!

  • It is important to see what the breeder has previously produced. It is good to see working dogs like service and therapy dogs. If you are interested in doing sports with your dog as well, we can list their previous puppies that have gone on to successfully compete in sports as well.
